Utah’s newest NHL franchise is on the verge of choosing its official name. Smith Entertainment Group, the team owner, recently unveiled six potential nicknames for Utah’s debut season in 2024-25. The options are Utah Blizzard, Utah Hockey Club (Utah HC), Utah Mammoth, Utah Outlaws, Utah Venom, and Utah Yeti.
These finalists were selected after a round of fan voting, with an impressive 520,000 votes cast. Over 60% of these votes went to the six remaining names. Fans can continue to vote for their favorite name until June 20.
In their first season, the team will wear jerseys with «UTAH» on the front, highlighting the team’s connection to the state and its new fan base. Once the final name is chosen, a logo, mascot, and branding will be developed by Smith Entertainment Group and featured on the team’s uniforms starting in the 2025-26 season.
Smith Entertainment Group took over the former Arizona Coyotes franchise, which moved to Utah in April. The NHL intervened due to the Coyotes’ lack of a permanent, NHL-standard arena. The franchise was then sold to Ryan Smith, owner of the NBA’s Utah Jazz. The upcoming season will be played at Delta Arena, home of the Jazz, with renovations planned to make it more suitable for hockey games.
The arrival of the NHL in Utah has generated excitement among fans. With the naming process in progress and a fresh start for the relocated franchise, the upcoming seasons are sure to be thrilling for hockey enthusiasts in the Beehive State.
